This is where discussions on high-impact alternatives (e.g., organic cotton, recycled polyester, bio-based materials), water and land usage, and transparency in the supply chain (e.g., tracing raw materials) will be taking place.

Let’s begin with this question: Setting aside recycled polyester and organic cotton, what “next generation” sustainable fiber (e.g., bio-based, regenerative agriculture) are you currently most excited about or actively testing?

The future of sustainable fashion increasingly lies in the development of bio-based fibers and materials derived from renewable and regional natural resources. One important direction for the textile industry is for each region to explore its own local bio-resources and investigate how agricultural by-products and natural waste streams can be transformed into innovative textile fibers and products.

At the same time, it is essential that these materials are developed through environmentally responsible processes that minimize the use of harmful chemicals, intensive resource consumption, and pesticides.

Today, a growing number of bio-based textile innovations already demonstrate this potential, including Piñatex made from pineapple leaf fibers, Mylo and mycelium-based leather alternatives derived from mushroom roots, Banana Fiber from agricultural waste, SeaCell developed with seaweed, algae-based biodegradable fibers, Apple Leather created from apple industry waste, and Orange Fiber produced from citrus by-products in Italy, among many others.

These examples show how circular thinking, biotechnology, and regional natural resources can play a key role in shaping a more sustainable and regenerative textile ecosystem.
