Revisiting Plant-Based Dyes as a Pathway to Cleaner Textile Dyeing
Textile dyeing remains one of the most environmentally demanding stages of textile production, with significant impacts on water use, chemical pollution, and energy consumption. As part of the MEDinCHAMBERS project, a recent workshop in İzmir explored how plant-derived dyes could support cleaner dyeing processes, green transition goals, and innovation opportunities for SMEs.
The discussion highlighted both the potential of dye plants as renewable, locally sourced, and heritage-based alternatives, and the challenges that still limit their wider industrial adoption, including colour fastness, standardisation, scalability, and cost.
