Eco-Labelling in Textiles: Helping Consumers Make More Sustainable Choices
As sustainability becomes an increasingly important consideration in the fashion and textile industry, eco-labels play a vital role in helping consumers identify products that meet specific environmental and social standards. Eco-labelling provides transparent information about a product’s environmental performance, production methods, material composition, and compliance with sustainability criteria.
In the textile sector, eco-labels are designed to communicate whether products have been manufactured using environmentally responsible processes, contain safer materials, reduce resource consumption, or meet specific requirements related to worker welfare and environmental protection. By offering reliable and verified information, eco-labels help consumers make more informed purchasing decisions and encourage companies to adopt more sustainable practices.
Several internationally recognized eco-labels are widely used in the textile industry. These include:
EU Ecolabel for Clothing and Textiles
Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS)
Each certification focuses on different aspects of sustainability, ranging from chemical safety and organic fibers to circularity, resource efficiency, and responsible production.
Eco-labelling is also becoming increasingly relevant within the European Union’s broader sustainability agenda. As new regulations related to transparency, traceability, and circular economy principles continue to emerge, eco-labels can support both businesses and consumers in navigating sustainability claims and identifying more responsible products.
While eco-labels are not a complete solution to the environmental challenges facing the textile industry, they represent an important tool for promoting transparency, accountability, and more sustainable consumption patterns. As consumer awareness continues to grow, eco-labelling is expected to play an increasingly significant role in the transition towards a more sustainable and circular textile ecosystem.
