New CEN Technical Specification Supports the Transition to a Circular Textile Economy

The European Committee for Standardization (CEN) has published a new Technical Specification, CEN/TS 18272-1 “Textiles – Circular economy for textile products – Part 1: General principles and guidance”, which provides a shared framework for applying circular economy principles to textile products and the textile value chain.

Designed to harmonize key principles, terminology, concepts, and guidance, the document provides a common reference point for industry stakeholders, policymakers, and standard-setting organizations.

This Technical Specification covers topics such as the relationship between textiles and the circular economy, circular strategies, technical and biological cycles, terminology, and the role of material choices throughout the life cycle of textile products.

As the first release in a broader standardization program led by CEN/TC 248/WG 39, Technical Specification CEN/TS 18272-1 serves as the foundation for upcoming standards covering circular design, non-virgin materials, sorting, and minimum durability requirements. Supporting key European policy developments like the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR), this new specification drives the transition toward a more sustainable, durable, and recyclable textile sector in Europe.

For industry, it provides a common framework and terminology that enable clear communication and collaboration throughout the textile value chain, contribute to a level playing field and facilitate trade across the European market. For society, it lays the foundation for a coherent European framework for circular textiles.
